Türkiye's nuclear energy plan is not limited to Akkuyu. The Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources announces that two more large-scale power plants are planned in Sinop and Thrace. However, it is not correct to describe these projects as “in operation” or “under construction”; The current status announced is the planning and international negotiations phase.
At what stage is the Sinop nuclear power plant?
Sinop has long been on the agenda as Türkiye's second largest nuclear power plant site. Previous technology and partnership frameworks have changed over time. Current official statements state that negotiations are continuing with the goals of high localization, technology transfer and appropriate financing model.
Before a project can move forward, topics such as technology selection, site evaluation, environmental processes, financing, intergovernmental framework and regulatory permits must be finalized. Therefore, possible capacity or commissioning dates should not be presented as final information without disclosing binding project documents.
What is known about the Thrace project?
Ministry sources refer to Thrace as the third large-scale nuclear power plant region. Even though the name Kıyıköy is mentioned in public statements, official license documents should be taken as basis in site and project details. Negotiations with different countries and suppliers do not mean that the final technology selection is complete.
Why are more than one project being discussed?
Large nuclear projects have long preparation, construction and commissioning times. Türkiye's official goal is to diversify its energy supply and grow its nuclear installed capacity in the 2050s. Parallel preparation for multiple sites is part of long-term planning.
What do localization and technology transfer mean?
Localization does not only mean using local materials in power plant construction. Qualified human resources, quality assurance, production at nuclear standards, maintenance competence, engineering services and research infrastructure are also part of this heading. In order for technology transfer to create permanent value, knowledge and competence must be kept in institutions.
How do we read the real status of a project?
- “Planning” does not mean that the investment decision has been completed.
- Intergovernmental negotiations are not reactor licences.
- Field work is not the beginning of construction.
- The target date depends on regulatory approval and project progress.
- Ministry and NDK documents should be used for the most up-to-date information.
These distinctions help evaluate the news on Türkiye's nuclear agenda without exaggeration.
